Personal Chef Services in Hampton Roads: How a Chef-at-Home Night Works
What it costs, how far we travel, and what a personal chef actually does in a Hampton Roads home, from the Southside to the Peninsula.

Hampton Roads is really seven kitchens in one region. A waterfront condo in Virginia Beach, a 1920s Norfolk row house, a new build in Chesapeake and a colonial in Williamsburg all cook differently, and a personal chef who works here has to plan around that rather than around a fixed menu.
This is how a chef-at-home evening runs across the region, and what to think about before you book one.
Where we travel
We cook throughout Hampton Roads: Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Williamsburg and Newport News. Tunnel timing is a real planning input here, so we build arrival windows around the Downtown and Midtown tunnels and the HRBT rather than hoping traffic cooperates.
For Peninsula bookings we typically arrive earlier and do more prep off-site, which keeps the kitchen calm once guests arrive.
What a personal chef actually does
- Menu design around your guests, allergies and the season
- Sourcing from local markets and the Atlantic coast rather than a warehouse list
- Cooking in your kitchen, with our own knives, pans and boards
- Plated or family-style service through the evening
- A kitchen left cleaner than we found it
Planning around a Hampton Roads kitchen
Most homes here have four burners and one oven, so a menu is designed so only one course is finished at the last minute. Everything else is braised, cured, chilled or par-cooked ahead. If you have an outdoor grill or a second oven, we will use it, but no menu depends on it.
Counter space matters more than equipment. Two clear feet of counter and access to a sink is genuinely all we need.
What it typically costs
Pricing depends on guest count, course count and sourcing rather than a flat per-person sticker. A four-course seated dinner for six is a different build than family-style for twenty, and shellfish, prime cuts and kosher sourcing all change the number. We quote after a short conversation about the evening, so nothing on the invoice is a surprise.
The kinds of nights we cook
- Anniversaries and birthdays where the host wants to stay at the table
- Small business dinners that would be awkward in a restaurant
- Holiday meals where the family cook finally gets a night off
- Sushi-making and interactive nights for a group that wants to do something, not just eat
